Not a stockbroker. Not a photoreal CEO. The smooth beige 3D head known as Meme Man — a surreal stand-in who has been wandering 4chan and Facebook since the early 2010s. Suit. Blue tie. Arms crossed like he understands the market. He does not. That is the point.
Every frame on this page is that man. The ticker is $STONKS because the word was always the joke.

$STONKS is not a new word invented for a coin. It is nine years of internet folklore about people who cannot spell “stocks” and buy them anyway.
Before the tote board, there was the head. A smooth, bald, beige 3D mannequin — later nicknamed Meme Man — drifted out of early-2010s 4chan and the Facebook page Special Meme Fresh. No pores. Tiny eyes. A smirk that suggested omniscience and contained none. He became the face of surreal memes: a character who could stand in for anyone, and therefore stood in for everyone who had no idea what they were doing.
The origin image is exact. Meme Man in a black suit and light-blue tie, arms crossed, planted on a royal-blue stock tote board. A fat orange arrow climbs the frame. Under it, one word, all caps, misspelled on purpose: STONKS. The Facebook post pulled a few thousand reactions and then sat there, like a bad options play, waiting.
July 3, 2017: the still hits r/Ooer, the subreddit that treats language like a broken toy. February 2018: a YouTuber named HallucinatoryMenu records the word with cathedral reverb — “stonks” as liturgy. March 2018: an Imgur dump carries an edit past 130,000 views. December 2018: r/memes puts him in an “I’ll take your entire stock” template. The reaction image finds its job: celebrate a financial decision that is, on inspection, insane.
June 2019, almost two years to the day: a fake-text screenshot of someone dumping the Stonks image into a breakup thread goes nuclear on Reddit. A week later Elon Musk posts “Stonk tip of the day.” The misspelling is now a word. Variants spawn — Helth, Shef, Tehc — the same beige head, new professions, same unjustified confidence. MEL Magazine writes that the joke is simple: all we know about money is the word “stocks,” and we cannot even spell it.
COVID hits. Indexes crater. “Not stonks” becomes the caption for a red arrow. The meme that mocked bad trades is now the scoreboard for a real one. Day-trader slang and the surreal template finally share a timeline.
r/WallStreetBets — “like 4chan found a Bloomberg terminal” — squeezes GameStop. Hedge funds bleed. Elon tweets “Gamestonk!!” and points at the subreddit. Business Insider calls the beige man the emblem of the saga. Merriam-Webster puts stonks in Words We’re Watching: a deliberate misspelling used “to imply a vague understanding of financial transactions or poor financial decisions.” The joke graduates. Meme stocks get a name. The name was already $STONKS, they just had not listed it yet.
